Currently the company is implementing the first, second and third stages of the remodeling project to revamp its seven regional office buildings, which incorporates the entire process from construction to facility refurbishment. It is a well known fact among people that Kyobo’s regional office buildings share the same design motif thereby helping the company shape its brand image by making each of them a landmark of each city. The company also prides itself on having a construction culture that produced a series of excellent buildings from its head office in Gwanghwamun and Sanggye-dong building to Gangnam building. Three alternatives were considered for the elevation design in the first stage of the project: economic design, reinterpreted design by Kyobo and entirely new elevation design. Two separate design works to reinterpret Kyobo’s design vocabulary were implemented in the first stage of the process, which includes the following elements: stable image with horizontal property, façade with straightforward design from four cardinal directions, and functional window and cross-section design as well as use of warm ceramic materials and space plan that embraces nature. The first stage design will play the key role in linking the second and third stage design that includes remodeling of Incheon and Jeonju regional office buildings. There was not sufficient room to maneuver due to small and cramped lot size as compared to the first stage construction in Numun-dong, Gwangju building and Daejeon building. However, the key principles of the first stage remodeling concept, which include comprehensive refurbishment of the aging facility and expansion of the sunken lobby to improve underground environment as well as improvement of work environment that goes all the way up to the rooftop garden, have been effectively passed down and implemented in the second and third stage construction of the project. With regard to exterior design, development potential and economic prospects of each office building were carefully considered with the following results: comprehensive improvement of Incheon building and minimum improvement of Jeonju building.
