Suwon Hwaseong Museum is the first fortress museum that comparatively exhibits the fortresses around the world as well as all the content about the new city of Hwaseong in the eighteenth century, including the spirit and process of building Hwaseong Fortress. The most important for this museum was the fact that it was built in Hwaseong, the actual relic site. Aside from its title of World Heritage Site, the fact of building a modern structure within in the historical relic which evidences all the aesthetic and technical skills of the age was itself a big issue. Therefore, we intended to articulate a new presence of Hwaseong for today within the old Hwaseong by abstracting the form that could coexist with the formal and spatial aesthetics of the fortress or defense facilities, instead of designing what could be built anywhere. The theme was, methodologically, to create another Hwaseong within itself.
